1. Tugan Sokhiev with Shostakovich and Liszt

Date of Broadcast£ºOctober 1, 2023

Dmitri Shostakovich was an admirer of Gustav Mahler. That is reflected in his Fourth Symphony, which recalls Mahler¡¯s musical idiom with its dance and march motifs and its inner turmoil. At the same time, Shostakovich grapples with Stalin¡¯s dictatorship. Tugan Sokhiev pairs the Fourth Symphony with Franz Liszt¡¯s Second Piano Concerto, a work full of expressive intensity. Alexandre Kantorow makes his debut as soloist with the Philharmoniker.

2. Fabio Luisi and Evgeny Kissin

Date of Broadcast£ºOctober 8, 2023

At 19, he was the last soloist to make his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker under Herbert von Karajan: Evgeny Kissin impressed listeners with his brilliant musicality and technique and has ranked among the keyboard greats since then. He interprets one of Mozart¡¯s best-known piano concertos. Fabio Luisi also conducts Franz Schmidt¡¯s late Romantic Second Symphony and a symphony by the Haydn pupil Marianna Martines.

3. Semyon Bychkov conducts Dvo?¨¢k ¡ª With Augustin Hadelich, Czech Philharmonic: 2023-24 season opener

Date of Broadcast£ºSeptember 30, 2023

The Czech Philharmonic performed their first concert in January 1896 under the baton of Anton¨ªn Dvo?¨¢k himself at the Rudolfinum in Prague. Fittingly, they open their 2023-24 season in the very same hall with a grand celebration of the legendary Bohemian composer, joined by maestro Semyon Bychkov and violin virtuoso Augustin Hadelich! The program begins with the enchanting concert overture In Nature's Realm, followed by the exquisite Violin Concerto in A minor¡ªwritten during Dvo?¨¢k's Slavonic period, when he broke from Germanic tradition and incorporated folk elements into a distinctive Czech style¡ªwith the solo role interpreted by Hadelich, one of today's most in-demand concert performers. Finally, Bychkov leads the orchestra in Dvo?¨¢k's Eighth Symphony in G, suffused with color and warmth. Its final movement begins with a trumpet fanfare, about which the great Czech conductor Rafael Kubelik quipped: "Gentlemen, in Bohemia the trumpets never call to battle¡ªthey always call to the dance!"

4. Lahav Shani conducts Gardiner, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, and Prokofiev ¡ª With Martha Argerich

Date of Broadcast£ºOctober 1, 2023

We've run out of superlatives to describe Martha Argerich, a "young eighty-something at the peak of her abilities"; all we can do is continue to marvel at her inimitable blend of faultless technique, self-assured artistry, and enigmatic personality. Don't miss the living legend in one of her signature pieces, Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 1, part of a dynamite lineup alongside the excellent Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra under Lahav Shani. The program also features music by Shostakovich's contemporary compatriots Stravinsky (the haunting Symphony of Psalms) and Prokofiev (excerpts from the beloved Romeo and Juliet), and begins with a transcription for choir and orchestra of Gardiner's Evening Hymn by none other than Maestro Shani!
